Sign Painting Workshops with Peter Liversidge

22 Jan 2025

Get involved in our art project by painting signs with artist Peter Liversidge

An image of the external black metal fencing which rings around the ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ. Signs of various sizes painted by artist Peter Liversidge have been put up all along it with various quotes and statements on them. From left to right they read 'Reanimating the stars'; 'Windows close by themselves'; 'This is a short sentence about proper pay for nurses'; 'Nurses are sisters brothers fathers mothers'; 'A hole in my sock'; 'A simple plan'; 'Where is the moon in the sky'; 'Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations in recognition of all humanity. Nursing promotes health, prevention of illness and care of the ill, disabled and dying'; 'Glass flowers in a stone vase'; 'Save the NHS'; 'In a single day'; 'Four months it's just a season'; 'We do'; and 'Basic elements'.

In autumn 2024, artist Peter Liversidge held a week-long Sign Painting Studio at the ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ Library and Museum. This year, we are planning to amplify and celebrate nurses’ voices through the creation of a unique artwork, giving ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ members the chance to paint or propose your own signs.

Join us for a range of workshops around the UK and online. The sessions will be led by Peter to guide you through the process of creating and painting your own signs.

Peter says:

"This project is a celebration of the ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ, taking its starting point from the rich and diverse collection at the ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ. It offers a way to share narratives as individuals and as groups.

The project is driven by a desire to make heard a multiplicity of nursing voices, setting up situations in which important questions can be asked about what it means to be a nurse and how to belong."
